Module 4: Coffee

For this module I decided to record the process of making a pot of coffee. I used a Flip camera, MP4 to AVI converter, and Windows Movie Maker. I decided not to add any music or narration because I really like the sounds that you hear when making coffee. The camera shots I used were full shots and close-ups. The angles I used were high angles, eye-level angles, and one bird's eye angle.

Full shots were used mostly to show the subject (coffee pot?) and close-ups were used to show details, like the coffee brewing in the pot and the coffee beans being poured into the grinder. When I used the bird's eye angle I did so because it was the only way to show the coffee filling up the cup since it was opaque, plus I thought it would be neat. I had to use a floor lamp for lighting because I don't have a kitchen window in my apartment.

I guess it what I was aiming for was information acquisition, because the steps of brewing a pot of coffee. Most people probably already have a schema for how to brew a pot of coffee. This video just serves to demonstrate the steps ;)

  1. NICE! Loved the question at the end.... I think the reason is.... you probably could invision the smell of the coffee, first from the grinding of it, then the brewing of it.

    Great video...love the different angles and shots of the video. It could be a commercial.

  2. Nicely done, Dave! I'm glad you didn't put music in... the sounds of the project itself are great. I love that morning ritual too (although I'm more of a french press girl.) Great camera angles. I especially liked the shot directly from above at the end, although all the equipment magically appearing at the beginning was really cool too.

  3. Hey,

    Well, you did it!!!

    You took something from the ordinary and mundane and made it into art!

    This is a fine art piece!

    Nicely structured, well presented, great cinematography...

    You have shown that art is often a demonstration of how less can be more...

    Your question is misleading... there is music... it is the music of the real...

    very good, thanks Dave

    Anyway- back to LOVING it. How did you get the different items to "pop" in!!! You must share your cinematographer skills!!!!

    Your sound was great as well, how were you able to capture the sounds without interferences?

    @Bri,
    I just recording me putting all of the stuff down and then cut out the parts where I placed each item down.I just made sure that the apartment was quiet before starting. Got lucky with that!
